Centaur Theatre’s “Shoplifters” at Centaur: Robin Hood or Criminal?

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019

Two-time Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Morris Panych takes simple ideas for plays, he says, “you take small events and spin them into larger issues”.  I see this play, The Shoplifters in that light, a bit like the TV series Seinfeld – they start out as Nothings – or the mundane aspects of life;  Panych takes something about nothing and makes it into something. This humorous yet poignant play as he notes, is about a “little grocery store episode”.

Along with Alma and Phyllis, we are thrown into the (fabulously imagined) back storage room of a grocery store as they are being questioned about a couple of steaks.  Though this seems a simple story about a woman and her preponderance for “five finger discounts”,  she sees it  more as her giving the “middle finger” discount –  taking from corporate profit and dispersing it in her neighborhood to those in need.

The Shoplifters was shoplifted from Morris Panych’s background; The two steaks go back to his Calgary boyhood. Panych admits that as a teenager “I also stole steaks. Lots of them. For fondues.” He also said, “If we wanted any joy in life, we had to steal it.”  Adding, “we were taking from The Man.” Aha, the theme of the play.

Another theme (and perhaps inspiration for Alma) came from a story he heard about a “an old woman in Florida who was arrested for shoplifting and didn’t want ‘rehabilitation’ because she actually enjoyed stealing”.

As usual Ellen David who, as Alma, lights up the stage with her spot on wise-cracking performance and subtle acting. She thrashes out to rookie security agent Dom in his ill-fitting new cop suit, “so those are training pants”. It’s not all laughs though as she bemoans to the guards, “We play the bad guys and you play the good guys”.

A wonderful pied-a-deux battle of wits with Alma is man-handled by Michel Perron as Otto, the world weary, seen-it-all, being-pushed-out-of his job, older security guard. Otto is aware of Alma’s sticky fingers and is fascinated by her “breezy confidence, daring-me-to-catch you” ways.

Alma is mentoring Phyllis, (played by Marie-Eve Perron) her twitchy nervous young accomplice, in the fine art of shoplifting, Phyllis unfortunately dropped a steak from under her skirt. Frustrated Phyllis, yells, “That’s what the double-sided tape is for!”  She’s caught by the brand-new (too) high strung security hire Dom (played by Laurent Pitre) and his crime fighting evangelist ways. He’s the black and white agent to Otto’s more learned greys.

The set developed by Ken MacDonald is brilliant. The Centaur stage became a giant Lego construction of perhaps 2000 supermarket boxes piled floor to ceiling.

Lucky for us, the playwright changed the play to make it sound like it’s actually happening in Montreal by hiring two francophone actors and sprinkling French throughout.

Panych wrote this  shout out about capitalist culture and how it affects the haves and the have-nots. He wants us to learn about ,  “people and how they rise or fall to the challenge of just living.”  But then adds, “Sometimes we secretly applaud the evening of the score.”

Casper Comfy Mattresses Pop Up Store

Friday, July 20th, 2018

In 2014 Casper  which had branded its name for its “outrageously” comfy mattresses, was introduced in Canada  I’m not sure how people buy mattresses online, as to me, it’s one of those purchases where I must lay down (for a good 20 minutes) and make sure it’s the right “fit” for me.

I have in the past (and have heard from other people too) bought a mattress that was way too hard. I chose a “hospital grade” mattress supposed to be good for your back and last a really long time. I made sure it was a company that gave you a trial period so I could return it – and I did. Others just have had to spend more money to put all kinds of fluffy tops on them to try to correct the mistake.

So back to Casper. They have opened up Le Chalet Casper where they give you the opportunity to try out their products (pillows, bedding, bed frames) in person. They’ve showcased them cutely in little “chalet-like” houses.

Nicole Tapscott, Senior Director and General Manager of Casper Canada says, “Le Chalet Casper is designed as an oasis for people to relax as they would in a summer chalet to escape the city heat and bustle. We encourage visitors to touch, feel and experience our sleep products in an environment that will leave them with the feeling of a life well slept.” I agree that you have to experience a mattress before buying one.

You can buy at the shop or have your purchases delivered.

Prom Dress Giveaway at the NDG Community Council

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018

All it takes is one person to have a light bulb go off and life gets better for many. Sharon Sweeney of the Sherbrooke Forest Art Hive received a donated prom dress. She remembered not having the budget to get the prom dress she wanted when she was younger, and voila – Sweeney and her colleagues organized a Prom Dress Donation/Giveaway project at the NDG Community Council. They’re already planning to do this again next year.

Turning their office into a boutique, they’ve already filled it with well over 150 dresses plus shoes, purses and even some jewelry. If it doesn’t fit, a seamstress has joined the effort along with a fashion designer to alter the outfits. And there’s even a photographer to take that memorable portrait.

Youth whose families struggle financially often borrow a dress which they may not even like. If you, your moms, daughters or friends have party dresses or gowns lingering in your closets, why not donate them and allow a girl to become a princess for a night? And if you need a fab prom dress – head to NDG where true believers in reduce, reuse or re-cycle are making fairy tales come true.

Parks Canada Free for Kids in 2018

Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

You can find the very best that Canada has to offer within Parks Canada parks and sites. When you visit, you learn the stories of where we came from and who we are, including the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna, along with Parks Canada’s Honourary Guide for Families, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, announced that admission for youth 17 and under is free for all national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas.

By making admission free for youth under 17, Canada is celebrating families and the importance of our protected areas. They are hoping that by connecting with nature, youth will gain a better understanding of our urgent need to not only protect it, but maintain it for future generations.

While youth will enjoy free admission beginning in 2018, Parks Canada is returning to fee-based admission for adults and seniors to national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas, including lockage at historic canals. The 2018 Parks Canada Discovery Pass is now on sale and is a great value, providing access to these national treasures all year long.

The Parks Canada Discovery Pass is the ideal way to discover nature and connect with Canada’s history. For information on purchasing the 2018 Parks Canada Discovery Pass, please visit the Parks Canada website: http://www.pc.gc.ca

Ingenious Ingenium: Canada Science and Technology Museum Re-Opened

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018

What can you say about a museum when the 7-year-old you are with stops in her tracks at the entrance because she’s in awe of what she sees? Imagine you are walking thru a video screen of Canadian nature: the aurora borealis, crystals, wheat fields or fire. The museum has been completely re-done, with only two of the all-time favorite exhibits remaining – the crazy kitchen (it’s still so fun watching the video monitor of “drunken” people trying to walk through) and those majestic steam locomotives.
IMG_0186

Visiting with a group of kids with an age range of 4-13, all of them were entranced for over 5 hours. Even though it was a busy weekend day, it rarely felt crowded, since there were so many corners to get lost in. One you may not find was a favorite – go past those hulking locomotives and around a corner to look for the soundproof Sounds of Silence room. Nearby, behind those trains, are movable touchable displays called Sound by Design.

The 13-year old liked the wearable technology and how it made the great outdoors easier to enjoy. He got to test a hockey helmets ( you get to whack one with a hammer) and perused the development of beekeepers’ gloves.

At Into the Great Outdoors, I was entranced by the land-water car owned by a family who needed it to drive/float to their chalet on an island.  Though the Zoom room was noted for ages 0-8, all of the kids had fun there – especially on the climbing wall with its secret smells and in the wind tunnel. The 4 year-old was in there for hours. We even saw couples on dates walking around in there with silly grins on.IMG_0167

Medical sensations was scary to one of the young girls, but they enjoyed manipulating facial features and guessing what the colorful patterns were which were captured by microscopes and telescopes.

The Exploratek room is near the cafe. Here the kids can gets creative and build buildings, create tube tracks or work with a robot.  The museum helps you keep costs down by making sure there are tables and cozy couches if you want to bring your own lunch, We’d suggest you do this, sinces the line for hot food in the cafe  moved slowly. There was a good selection of healthy foods.

A few times a day there are live demonstrations – we got lucky and saw one on pyrotechnics, including a rocket firing. Three-Two-One blast-off to this interactive fun learning museum.fire

Centaur Theatre is a Hockey Town in Flames Cause it’s “Playing with Fire”

Friday, October 6th, 2017

Montrealers have hockey in their DNA, so it is easy to suggest that you head to the Centaur Theatre to see “Playing with Fire”, a must-see play about hockey – it’s even performed on a hockey rink!  Okay, it’s a synthetic one, but the star of this one-man show, Shaun Smyth, skates and acts the entire show in full hockey gear as NHL’er Theo Fleury. Now that’s something Habs fans can enjoy – even though he played for the Calgary Flames when they beat us for the Stanley cup in 1989.

Smyth (through the storytelling gift of author and playwright Kirstie McClellan Day) grips you from the last bars of “O, Canada” and takes you through every sweaty moment of his roller coaster life. She glides you in to the sad family life of a diminutive kid from Russell, Manitoba who, after skating, “took his time getting dressed cause I didn’t want to go home”-  to one of only 90 NHL players who have scored 50 goals in a season and then went on to win a Stanley cup and even a gold medal in the Olympics. For Fleury,  “sports was his salvation and his escape”.fleury1

The story is based on the autobiography of Theo Fleury, a book which spent a year on the Canadian bestseller list. His tortured past included the awfulness of a a coach (Graham James) sexually abusing him as a young teen. This led him to years of self-destruction, blowing 50 million dollars on addictions to booze, drugs, strippers and gambling.

To be fully prepared for this part, Shaun Smyth hired a hockey coach to make him a good enough player to meet the expectations of the NHLers he knew would come to see the show. He spent two years practicing, renting ice time and playing pick-up games. If that wasn’t hard enough, imagine skating and acting in a one-man show at the same time (and memorizing 7 different versions of it). He, like Fleury, was fearless playing both jobs.

Director Ron Jenkins, along with set and lighting designer  David Fraser, impossibly make the hockey rink slide into everything from an ambulance/hospital room to a hockey sweater cupboard or a firy inferno. The projections and videos by Corwin Ferguson really illustrate the narrative, whether showing hockey cards of players Fleury is referencing or news stories, prairie scenes or even Calgary “flames”.fleury2

A hometown sidebar is the “So You Think You Can Sing O, Canada” contest which was held before the play opened. Contestants submitted a demo, and each night of the show, “O, Canada” starts the performance, sung by a different Montrealer. Come and watch your neighbours trill.

Meeting Theo Fleury on opening night was a privilege. He has become an advocate for abuse victims, giving over 50 lectures a year – even in prisons which include child molesters (now that’s forgiveness!). Fleury said, “We all get addicted to something. We can get rid of stigma. We can all heal“.

Though the play showcased a superstar behaving badly, Theo Fleury the man is a double hero: physically he’s a hero, succeeding in the impossibly tough game of NHL hockey, but he’s also a mental hero who was courageous and strong enough to beat his demons too.

Scrumptious Butcher-Cut Maple Bacon

Wednesday, July 5th, 2017

Perfect on the barbeque to top your steaks, burgers or even fish, is the thick cut artisanal bacon created by the Grumpy Butcher (Boucher Fache). Do you remember bacon the way it used to be?

Rob Braide and his son Ian have been tinkering with bacon recipes for over 15 years to make it the way it should be. They locally craft it using Quebec pork, organic maple sugar and maple syrup. It is free from chemicals and full of character.

They have added to their repertoire: maple cured lardons which are a scrumptious topping for salads or eggs and now Jamaican Jerk bacon – expect a bit of a bite.

The sliced maple bacon is made in small batches for a great big taste. You can  order it on their Grumpy Butcher web site or buy it at Le Panier in Pointe Claire or at 5 other locations around town. Online, minimum orders are $25 and if you spend over $50, there’s free shipping.

First Time Sale for Menswear, Shoes, Ladies Handbags and Leather Goods

Friday, May 5th, 2017

Dash65  has opened up to the public so take advantage of their fine leather products at warehouse sale prices along with shoes for both men and women and men’s sample clothing. Men can buy Altemflower shirts from Italy in fine fabrics with lots of details and t-shirts. The guys who can wear sample size medium will go to town on the blazers, lightweight sweaters, belts, jeans, denim shorts, jewelry and shoes.

Ladies can find shoes, wallets and tons of greatly reduced designer leather handbags (some by Hobo). Let’s say a $400 purse might be reduced to only $120. Shoes are there for the ladies, mostly for $80 a pair with booties at $95.

They are very strong in selling executive, business, and travel accessories such as: briefcases, tablet cases, wallets, travel organizers, passport and currency holders. And look too for umbrellas, toiletry cases, coffee mugs and water bottles.

Check out their facebook and Instagram for pix. There’s free parking, and Visa, Mastercard and cash are all accepted. All sales are final.
