This is so sad. My favourite homey hardware store run by a friendly husband and wife who knew how to offer you that old-fashioned personal touch is now closing at the end of December – and everything in the store is 50% off.

The back of the store is filled with the screws, paint, hooks, tools, lightbulbs, plumbing and all those bits and pieces of hardware that we always need. Steve was there to help you select just the right thing.

When the big box stores showed up, they re-purposed the front to be more of a variety store. So that meant giftware, kitchenware, rugs, drapery hardware, fun signs, bathroom accessories, towels, warm winter gloves, socks, Christmas decor, etc.

When the store closes, Steve will still be mobile in order to help us with services like: screen door repair, key cutting, plexiglass cutting, sharpening of knives, scissors, garden tools and lawn mower blades.

Every year, I get requests about the traditional Claxton fruit cake and where to find it. Throughout November and December it is a fundraiser (usually their only one of the year) held by the Lakeshore Civitan Club

The club is part of a world-wide community organization dedicated to raising funds for intellectually handicapped organizations and other groups that support them. Selling the Claxton Fruit Cakes is the only way they raise these funds.

All cakes are sold by volunteers and all funds raised go to local charities, in the past they have helped:  WIAIH (West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped), West Island Special Olympics, Light a Dream, Lucky Harvest, Generations, AVATIL (Training for Independent Living), Citizens Advocacy, Friends for Mental Health and Easter Food Baskets to the underprivileged in the West Island.
