Mountain Equipment Co-op started in 1972 with its co-op concept. This sporting goods store now has over 2,000,000 loyal members who have paid $5 to join –  and very high customer satisfaction.  It has always been an environmentally conscious company: the Montreal store uses geothermal energy, radiant heating and cooling, and a natural ventilation system.

They offer a free service on their website where you can sell or swap your used outdoor gear. Started way back in 1997, MEC’s Online Gear Swap has been their way of encouraging people to recycle and re-use outdoor gear.

The postings are limited to outdoor equipment that’s intended for non-motorized adventure. No cars, dirt bikes, baseball stuff, hunting or fishing gear, or BBQ’s are allowed.
