Run to See the The Drowsy Chaperone, 2 More Shows
Friday, March 25th, 2011This show was one of the best musical comedy experiences I’ve had in Montreal. Don’t miss it. The Drowsy Chaperone won 5 Tony awards when it was on Broadway. The Hudson Music Club is presenting it this season. The last 2 shows are tomorrow March 26th at 2pm and 8pm.
Everyone could use a good laugh and this show provides lots of them. Basically it is a “a musical within a comedy.” A narrator called Man in Chair plays a rare cast recording of the faux 1928 musical The Drowsy Chaperone. As he starts to tell the story of the show, it comes to life, complete with its motley cast of gangsters, a butler, a playboy, an actress, an aviatrix, a Latin lover and, of course, the drowsy chaperone in the title.
While the show goes on, Man in Chair periodically pauses the action to comment on the hammy performances, explain the silly plot and gossip about the actors who starred in the original production. It’s both a musical and a loving satire of one. Nicholaw described it best on Playbill.com, when he called it “a cross between The Daily Show and No, No, Nanette.”
