Hollow (Chocolate) Ween
Just visited, Chocolats Privilege, a chocolate shop/bakery at 1001 Fleury est (Phone: 514-385-6335) and was wowed by their original chocolate combinations. For Halloween they have dreamed up these spider web and ghost tomb boxes for you to tuck in a few of their chocolates. Though their signature one called “Privilege” is a crowd pleasing dark chocolate and coffee combo, they sell lots of ganaches ($8.50 per 100 gram) combined with: green tea, or basil and lime, or LBV porto, or rosemary and cream, or coconut milk and coriander, or a raspberry/blueberry/black currants combo. Another idea they came up with is making chocolates with the true bean flavors of certain parts of the world: Costa Rica, Madagascar, Grenada, Cuba, Tanzania, etc. There’s a caramel line, pralines and specialties: almond paste with walnuts, rum, white and dark chocolate, candied lemon peel, half-coated orange slice and a couple of sugarless options. Halloween cakes run $11.95-$30.95 in chocolate creme brule, flourless chocolate cake, salty caramel or – what else – pumpkin cream. (Smart Shopping hint: usually these places tend to sell off all holiday items at greatly reduced prices the day or two after the day has passed – and they still taste as good!). Other locations: Jean Talon Market, 514-276-7070; Kirkland, 514-694-2261.
