Dough Nut
I don’t like donuts but I adore the mezzaluna at Salerno in Montreal North. It’s a to-die-for half moon of fluffy fried dough which is stuffed with sweetened ricotta and dusted with sugar. It is not always available as they sell out fast and is best ordered the day before if you want to make sure to get one. They’re about the size of two donuts and cost $2.25. The rest of this Italian depanneur which is plunk in the middle of an Italian neighborhood (and open 24 hours every day) is filled with the required cold cuts and salads along with crusty breads like the pagnotta or the corona with a hole or the di grano, a whole wheat and white bread combo. Take out specialties include – the stuffed pizza (cold cuts inside), calzone (cold cuts with cheese or spinach and cheese) or taralli, pretzel-like made with fennel, but do not leave without buying the to-die-for mezzaluna.
