CJAD: Furniture for Less
Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009Q1 : With Montreal moving day coming up in a month, it’s time to think about buying furniture. If we have tight budgets this year, what can we do to be able to buy what we need?
A: There are 2 ways to go: liquidation stores of the major chains or catalogue buying.
Q 2: Let’s start with the chains, which ones have clearance centers and what can we find there?
A: Centre de Liquidation Brault & Martineau, 1770 Blvd. des Laurentides at St. Martin Blvd. Phone: (450) 667-3211. It’s worth taking the drive into the outskirts of the city if you want some good deals on floor models from all their stores. Expect to find a big selection of couches, lots of chairs and kitchen sets, dining room tables, some wall units, audio video equipment including TV’s, major appliances (wine fridges!) and even mattresses. Other locations: 12605 Sherbrooke e. (514-645-7447); 8220 boul. Taschereau (450-465-7744); 3782 Cote-Vertu (514-335-9555). braultetmartineau.com
Brick Liquidation, 1001 Cure Labelle Blvd. at Notre Dame Blvd. Phone: (450) 973-1111. This chain store already offers low prices on their household furnishings, so finding a liquidation center for them makes it even better. The same kind of furniture and appliances are here: wall units, couches, recliners, bedroom sets, kitchen tables, fridges, stoves, washers and dryers, dishwashers and televisions, etc., all at walk-out-with-them prices.www.thebrick.com
Sears, 6900 Boul. Decarie, Carre Decarie Phone: (514) 731-6118. It’s good to have a Sears clearance center. You know their reputation for good service, and now you can buy their large appliances (fridges, stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers) at greatly reduced prices. Then you can peruse the loungers, sofas, end tables, exercise bikes, chairs and TV’s.
Q3 : What does catalogue buying mean?
Instead of stocking rooms and rooms of furniture, businesses chose to showcase a sampling from different companies. When you decided on a style of furniture that you liked, someone sits down with you to go through catalogues of those companies with a similar look. This way you were not limited to the one piece that the buyer happened to pick out. You could choose the size, shape and color to suit your own decor. On top of all this selection and decorating help, you paid at least 30% less for your purchase, because they did not have to warehouse and stock the pieces.
Furniture Wholesalers, 45 Boul. Montpellier . Phone: (514) 274-8255. When you decide on a furniture company that you like, you pay at least 30% less for your purchase because they do not have to warehouse the pieces. The dozens of high quality brands here are not found in many stores in this city: Sumter, Hooker, Cochrane, Stanley, Broyhill, American Drew, Bernhardt, Pulaski, Hammary, Lee, Lexington, Lane, and Aico.
Meubles Linton Furniture, 4646B ave du Parc Phone: (514) 272-1944. Three generations of Montrealers have been saving money on furniture here, and now you can join them in these spacious new digs. Look wherever you want for American or Canadian made furniture (American Drew, Hooker, Jaymar, Broyhill, Canadel, Shermag, Bermex, Decor-Rest, etc.) and then come here to this catalogue store to buy it using their helpful stable of salesmen. For 70 years, people have been using this method to save at least 35% off the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices. meubleslinton.com
Q4 Any other ideas?
A: Look at Craig’s list, Kijiji and classified ads in local newspapers
