Centaur’s Bed and Breakfast has 22 Reasons to Visit

3_BandB_Mark Crawford and Paul Dunn as Brett and Drew_Photo by Andrée Lanthier
Bed and Breakfast, now playing at the Centaur Theatre, was cleverly written by Toronto playwright/actor Mark Crawford, and covers the gamut of gay existence in a bitingly funny face-paced play. The best part of this production is that playwright Mark Crawford gets to be actor Mark Crawford in this gay-partner duo, along with his real life partner actor/playwright Paul Dunn. What a powerhouse these two are.

The couple are thrust into small town Canada as gay pioneers when Crawford, as Brett, inherits his Aunt Maggie’s house. With their design and hospitality industry skills, they decide to turn it into a B & B. Chameleons Crawford and Dunn re-make themselves brilliantly and surprisingly not confusingly into 22 local characters. Dunn, as Drew, manages to twist himself into characters so well that no explanations are needed as he switches back and forth instantly from one person to another.

Set and costume designer Dana Osborne performed miracles with the most minimal of sets – one platform bed with a magician’s worth of drawers and storage. As for costumes, I don’t think I’ve seen so many combinations of pants, shirts and sweaters taken on and off since my last girlfriends’ shopping spree.

The story flings through everything from homophobia to hate crimes to anonymous phone calls, to coming out, to gay teens and relationship with parents, along with latte orders, choosing bathroom tiles and Santa Claus parades. Loved the line about how impossible it was to organize gay parades in Toronto since gays will never “line up straight”.

Million Dollar Quartet Led by Million Dollar Agent

Thursday, April 27th, 2017

One tends to forget that it is the behind-the-scenes people who make stars stars. Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Studio and Sun Records, was a shrewd man and one of the early brand marketers. Million Dollar Quartet, a Tony Award winning musical, tells the story of his tens of thousands of miles journeyed going from radio station to radio station trying to get air time for the musicians he believed in. It’s been said that he had the magic ear and could sense a star after hearing him play for just ten seconds. Elvis Presley in the show utters, “He seen something in me I’d never seen myself” and if not for Phillips, “I’d be driving a truck”.

On this magical day, December 4, 1956,  Jerry Lee Lewis wound up playing piano during a Carl Perkins (king of rockabilly music) recording session at Phillips’s Sun Studio. When Elvis Presley walked in unexpectedly, Phillips called in Johnny Cash, leading to an impromptu session featuring the four musicians.IMG_2430

Perhaps Phillips was thinking strategically, so he coined them the Million Dollar Quartet, and he eventually turned that session into a record. Perhaps he was also seeing the writing on the wall as each neophyte he nurtured (Cash, Perkins and Elvis) was leaving him in order to be represented by a major record company.

IMG_2463Sky Seals shows versatility playing Johnny Cash on edge as he is worried about telling Phillips about leaving yet still is able to portray his calm deep hypnotic voice when he croons. James Loye playing Sam Phillips, blocks out the story, telling us how hard it was trying to get the DJ’s to play the “devil’s music”, as it was being banned by laws and shunned by the church. It is hard playing the straight man to a bunch of high energy music masters, but Loye plays it brilliantly.

Christo Graham as Jerry Lee Lewis steals this show with his showmanship – and – over the top (literally) piano playing.  I don’t know how George Krissa’s leg (as Elvis Presley) doesn’t just fling off with all that shaking going on. He plays the ingenue Elvis understatedly well. Having been to Sun Studio in Memphis I can confirm that set designer, Brian Dudkiewicz, hit it bang on.

Though people thought Phillips was plain dumb selling off Elvis’s contract to save his recording studio, let it be known that he smartly flipped the cash into shares of a new company called “Holiday Inn”, and he too became one of the million dollar players (and we all know what happened to Elvis).

Director Lisa Rubin kept the show nice and tight, balancing out the jamming we wanted to hear along with the history that must be told. And she orchestrated the best planned curtain call ever. It’s rare for a member of the “orchestra pit” (Evan Stewart) to get his moment to shine too. You will be rocking and rolling out the door to this one.

Friendly Family Laundromat for Spring Cleaning Time

Friday, April 14th, 2017

Montreal is lucky to have a friendly, helpful, long-serving laundromat family in our midst. With two of the largest (the most washers and dryers) locations in the city, Lavoir Patricia and Lavoir Victoria have had the same owner for 38 years, so there is a continuity and long-time understanding of the best machines and knowledge of how to get your items clean.

Unlike most facilities, they have full time staff in both locations to advise and and assist you, or else the staff will do your complete laundry (wash and fold) for an additional fee). The Patricia location in Montreal West has 6 different sizes of washers, from 10 lbs to 65 lbs. When you walk all the way to the back, you will find the 4 giant washers at the 65 lb capacity (and 4 giant dryers), so you can do big loads quickly and efficiently. Also, the less expensive machines with double capacity are at the Patricia location.

Lavoir Patricia and Lavoir Victoria are very customer friendly. Yes, you should be bringing in your own preferred soap, softeners and bleach, but if you are stuck they will sell you a cup. They have carts, washroom facilities, customer seating, bill changers and counters on which to fold your clothes.

Even if you have a washer and dryer at home, there are still times you might need this laundromat – for spring cleaning, putting winter clothes away, when the kids come back from camp, getting ready for big holidays or if your machine at home suddenly breaks down.

They are the only laundromat in the city with 4 77 lb capacity dryers.

Here are some ideas of when you might need the cleaning facilities of this laundromat:

– Camping equipment: blankets, comforters, sleeping bags
– Washable curtains
– Winter clothing: heavy parkas, ski pants, long coats
– Large comforters, blankets or washable duvets and duvet covers
– Refreshing pillows
– Slipcovers for couches

Lavoir Patricia has Maytag top-load washers along with Wascomat front-load washers, which are considered some of the best in the world. A regular cycle in these professional machines comprises 2 washes and 3 rinses, which means five complete water changes to ensure the cleanest wash possible. These are available in 20 lb., 30 lb., 40 lb. and in the 55 lb. size which is great for giant loads – could be used for sleeping bags, couch covers, comforters and other large items.

Look for their coupon on the web site www.MontrealLaundromat.com which changes every few weeks. Lavoir Patricia and Lavoir Victoria aim to take the stress out of laundry day.

Locations: Patricia Location – 5320 Patricia Ave., Montréal  QC H4V 1Z2
Lavoir Victoria – 5950 ave Victoria Montreal QC H3W 2R8
Hours: Patricia – Mon-Fri 7-8:30, Sat & Sun 7-7 / Victoria – Sun-Fri 7-7, Sat 5-7
