Q&A: Socks

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Q: I know in your other editions of Smart Shopping Montreal you had a place to stock up on socks and was wondering if this place still exists.

A: You have a good memory. That depot closed quite a few years ago. Right now you can shop at the flea markets which all have booths with socks. One in Chomedey is Marche aux Puces St-Martin, on 1550 boul. Daniel Johnson at Blvd St -Martin  or there’s Boutiques Marcado on 3565 Taschereau Blvd.

There’s Lingerie Hanna in the Plaza Pointe Claire off Highway 20 on St-John’s Blvd. It has similar merchandise to the ones in the flea markets but is in a mall with regular hours.

Concentrating on couturier made-to-measure fashions since 1962, the team of Serge Senecal and Real Bastien have hung up their sewing needles and scissors. We have been fortunate here in Montreal to have world known world class designers on our doorstep.

Over the years they had dressed our stars, Mila Milroney, Jeanne Sauve, Ginette Reno and Jackie Desmarais and in other locales of New York City and Palm Beach, dressed other ones as well.

You can empty your bank account and take a look at what you might be able to buy from the samples that are left in their atelier.

Q&A: Winter Hats

Friday, January 24th, 2014

Q: I love your site! I am looking for a winter hat for my mom. She is 92, drives herself around, very active lady, but she needs a nice vegan hat to zip around town. Where should I take her?

A: Most major stores have winter hats now. Very few are wool so it shouldn’t be a problem finding one. A  wholesaler who has lots and lots of fancy hats and some casual too is  Nicole, 9200 av. du Parc, suite 407 or Ophelie, 7050 Victoria Ave, suite 415 Tel: (by appt) 341-8624.

Here’s a hat store, Haya Kova in Decarie Square . Make sure they’re still open as that mall has been under going major changes: 514-731-4383. Also, in the big malls, there are carts that show up in the aisles in the cold months which sell hats and slippers.

Time to Listen to Music

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Since you’re stuck in the house more, this is a good time to spend time listening to favorite music – both new and old. If you like to own the recordings and want to stock up all in one place, head to Disque Beatnick Records.

It’s right on St-Denis but a bit south of the main shopping area. It’s worth going to for its combination of old and new music in vinyl. To tell them apart, the red or pink stickers indicate the used items and the green means it’s new. Sections for rock, jazz, reggae, soul, 60’s, etc. have bins and there are walls showing off the greats of vinyl; don’t miss the little back room.

Location: 3770 St-Denis St., Montreal H2W 2M1
corner: Ave du Pins
Tel: 514-842-0664
Hours Sun, Mon-Wed & Sat 11-6, Thurs & Fri 11-9
