Nuts to You

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Just eyeballed a new West Island location for Basse at 3643 boul. des Sources (514-683-0111). Around for 15 years, this Mid-Eastern family business (5 brothers) has been oil-roasting and dry-roasting all kinds of nuts: 6 types of pistachios or almonds (tamari, bbq, candied), pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts and caramel pecans. Other interesting goodies abound: roasted chick peas, corn nuts, double roasted hot peppers, dried kiwi, peanut/rice crackers and roasted peas. Grocery items to be found might be blossom or rose water, bags or jarred zaatar, bitter orange jam, stuffed zucchini and, if you need them, gallon jars of hot peppers. Other locations: 9360 Charles de Latour (514-387-8828); 4555 Autoroute 440 Ouest (at the plant 450-781-1255).

Fun in the Woods

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Want to get the family out for some fresh air and outdoor fun which involves exercise and a treasure hunt in the woods? Orienteering is a sport where you walk briskly or run while following a course in the woods (using a map). It is a physical and mental challenge as you try to find flags or tapes in the least amount of time. If you’re bored with walking your neighborhood streets, or have a spreading middle from sitting inside at the computer, or want to have an enjoyable day out with the kids, this is a great individual or family sport. Some beginner instruction will be available before you start, enough to enable first-timers to successfully complete the easiest course. There are 4 courses and each course is designed to have a fastest time of about one hour. Date: Sun, Sept 9.
Time: You can start anytime between 10am-12pm and the courses close at 2:30 pm Where: This meet is at the Bois-de-Liesse Nature Park (West Island) in the Chalet d’Accueil des Champs.
To get there: Take the Trans Canada Highway (40), to Autoroute 13 (nord); in one km take the Henri Bourassa exit (ouest); then go north on Douglas B. Floreani – and into the park. Parking is generally possible on Floreani or, for a $7 fee, beside the chalet. Note: This is not the Gouin Blvd. entrance to the Park.
Cost: First-time Beginners $8. Adults $12. Under 21 $7. Ramblers Club members $5 or $3 under 21. FREE for “helpers”. Compass rental is $1. Membership: Anyone wishing to join the Club will be able to do so at the meet site. 3 more meets are planned for this Fall plus two next Winter.

HHW = household hazardous waste + (dumps)

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Often we have unwittingly collected hazardous items (HHW = household hazardous waste) such as 1/2 empty paint cans, old prescriptions, used batteries, etc and we have missed our particular city’s yearly collection date. According to The Chronicle Newspaper, Eco Quartiers around the island accept HHW on Fri, Sat, Sun and there are other businesses that will take them back as well:

– used oil and car batteries are accpeted by Canadian Tire
– expired prescription drugs can be brought back to most pharmacies
– paint leftovers can dropped off at some RONA stores (www.eco-peinture.ca has a big list of off places)
– rechargeable batteries and old cellphones will be accepted by any Montreal fire station

His tailors are busily measuring different customers while other buyers are perusing the table piled with books of thousands of fabric swatches, and still others are checking out some sample shirts and suits. The prices are excellent – for three custom-made shirts, it’s only $135 plus tax and shipping (about $25). Suits go for $395 – $495, and orders take about eight weeks to arrive.
